Lauren's Favorite Books of 2010

According to Charlie, Lauren is a combination of rusty nails and daffodils.  Make of that what you will...

She's also a teacher, librarian, fiction junkie, and our resident kidlit enthusiast--hence all of the children's books and YA titles on her list.

ROOM tells the story of five-year-old Jack, who has spent his entire life held captive in one room with only his mother and the objects around them for company.

I think what I love most about this book is the voice. Donoghue nails perfectly the voice of her child narrator... at times I felt like it could have been one of my kindergarten students talking to me. There is a very haunting and poignant contrast in the way that this completely innocent voice contrasts with the story he tells. The circumstances under which he and his mother are living are terrifying--and yet, for him, completely normal, since he has nothing else to gauge it against. His emotional journey throughout the story (and that of his mother) is just so gripping. Easily one of my favorite books this year.

This YA novel is a perfect blend of edgy and historical. It follows Andi, a privileged teen struggling to cope with the tragic death of her younger brother. When her estranged father takes her on a trip to Paris, she discovers a journal from the French Revolution, and becomes enveloped in its story--it belonged to a girl her age fighting to save the life of the young son of Marie Antoinette. The more Andi delves into the journal, the more the lives of the two girls seem connected somehow. Highly recommended.

Part HUGO CABRET, part THIEF LORD, this middle-grade novel follows three ordinary children brought together by extraordinary events... Giuseppe is an orphaned street musician from Italy, who was sold by his uncle to work as a slave for an evil padrone in the U.S. But when a mysterious green violin enters his life he begins to imagine a life of freedom. Hannah is a soft-hearted, strong-willed girl from the tenements, who supports her family as a hotel maid when tragedy strikes and her father can no longer work. She learns about a hidden treasure, which she knows will save her family -- if she can find it. And Frederick, the talented and intense clockmaker's apprentice, seeks to learn the truth about his mother while trying to forget the nightmares of the orphanage where she left him. He is determined to build an automaton and enter the clockmakers' guild -- if only he can create a working head. Together, the three discover they have phenomenal power when they team up as friends, and that they can overcome even the darkest of fears.

This is one lovely, powerful little book... Caitlin is an eleven-year-old girl living with Asperger's syndrome, and struggling--along with the rest of her community--to move on after a tragic school shooting that cost her brother Devon his life. Devon was the one who helped her move through the world, who explained to her the things she didn't understand, and without him, nothing is the same. In her search for closure, she discovers much about the world around her... and of course, about herself as well.

Melody is eleven years old and has never spoken a word in her life. That's not to say she hasn't wanted to... all her life she's been enamored of words, and she's one of the smartest kids in her school. Unfortunately, no one knows this but her, as her cerebral palsy makes others think she's incapable of just about everything. Until, that is, she makes a discovery that finally gives her a voice... A standout novel with a compelling voice and a heartfelt story.

I'm not usually a mystery fan, but I couldn't resist this one. Anton has spent his whole life tangled in a web of corruption. After reinventing himself and settling into a less unprincipled existence, his past business partners convince him to undertake one last job. The job, which seems simple enough, quickly becomes more complicated, and threatens to unravel the new life Anton has created for himself. A taut, suspenseful gem of a novel, beautifully crafted and artfully written.

I adored THE HISTORY OF LOVE, so I spent much of 2010 eagerly anticipating GREAT HOUSE. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint. A more cerebral read than HISTORY, this book follows four seemingly disparate characters whose lives are all linked by a great wooden desk. Lovingly constructed, this book is not for impatient readers, but it will reward your efforts and is definitely demanding of a reread.

I don't read much nonfiction, a habit I've unsuccessfully been trying to remedy for some time now. But somehow, THE TIGER slipped onto my radar and into my hands this year, and I'm very glad it did! In THE TIGER, John Vaillant reconstructs the true story of Yuri Trush's hunt for a man-eating Siberian tiger in 1990s Russia, all the while deftly interweaving both a fascinating history of the area and a study of the tiger itself. Truly a gripping read!

I loved this dark, comedic, coming-of-age story from local-ish YA author A.S. King. Vera Dietz spent most of her life secretly in love with her best friend Charlie, and even after he betrayed her, she's kept a lot of his darkest secrets. When Charlie dies--under very mysterious circumstances--Vera must decide whether to come forward with what she knows, or keep Charlie's secrets buried with him. Vera is by far one of the most commanding and well-drawn characters I've encountered in young adult lit.
