Para comienzos de la d cada de 1560 lleg a la isla de Puerto Rico, sin predestinarlo, un soldado extreme o llamado Rodrigo Ortiz V lez. A lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI se radicar a en la villa de San Germ n, sirviendo tanto en su Cabildo como en sus fuerzas militares, eventualmente siendo electo alcalde ordinario en 1572 al momento de la mudanza de la villa a su localizaci n final en las Lomas de Santa Marta.
Ataques por indios caribes y corsarios franceses marcaron sus primeras d cadas en la Isla, con tr gicas consecuencias; acusaciones de contrabando e incumplimiento de deberes marcaron las ltimas.
Este trabajo es el resultado de un estudio investigativo de su vida en Espa a y Puerto Rico. Se narran y detallan en orden de sucesi n eventos de tragedia y celebraci n en la vida de Rodrigo Ortiz V lez, contextualizando esos acontecimientos en cada paso con la cronolog a de la propia villa de San Germ n. Se presenta adem's informaci n relevante a sus acciones que permite profundizar su influyente papel en los asuntos internos de la villa, y lo cual a su vez invita a una posible revaluaci n de su importancia hist rica en la regi n. En adici n, los datos biogr ficos presentados son en su mayor a a base de fuentes documentales primarias, incluyendo transcripciones de documentos in ditos relevantes a su vida y su familia.
